Transformative Learning Projects

Laura Vetter and Katerina Brandes co-created transformative learning journeys that were offered under the title “Embodied Systems Understanding for Holistic Action-Oriented Sustainability Transformations”.

During the second and third semesters, the master students at ITT can choose from a range of mandatory elective project modules one that suits their interest. The following page gives insights into those projects that used Theory U as a didactic framework, methodology, teaching content and pedagogical attitude. In the projects, students addressed the research question “How can the U process (Theory U framework and methods) be implemented as a strategy for promoting transformational processes that address the root causes of today’s (environmental) challenges in the context of NRM, IWRM and REM” by experiencing some Theory U methods firsthand.

The modules were based on Theory U as a social technology for learning, leading, innovating, and systems-level renewal, growing out of the MIT Center for Organizational Learning. The aim of the course was to train future sustainability leaders, fostering leadership mindsets and skills for collective ecosystem consciousness and system transformation. The facilitators blended the Theory U approach with other mindfulness and arts-based methods, fostering a strong sense of community to enable collaborative and creative learning experiences.

“Theory U for implementation strategies”
Project 3 (P1170)
WS 2021-22

We have learned and practiced how to use Theory U methods while putting them into practice in a concrete project. We created the UconnectingLab and we want you to know about our journey.

“Theory U as solution finding methodology”
Project 2 (P1160)
SS 2022

We experiment with systemic Theory U tools, including case clinics, 3D mapping, stakeholder interviews, dialogue walks and other mindful, creative and joyful practices with the lecturer Katerina Brandes.

WS 2022-23

Using Theory U tools, this project is co-creating a project focus based on points of curiosity and wonder: Looking at the challenges around the topic of sustainable development and natural resources management projects.

Project 2 (P1160)
SS 2023

The inner development goals, aimed at sustainable system transformations, were examined through a set of mindfulness practices as Laura served as our guides with a prototype created by Katherina on this learning journey on the lecture from Prof. Hamhaber. This enriching experience was further complimented by the online course “ULab – Leading from the emerging future” on EDX.
